Crowns are custom made synthetic caps or “helmets” typically used to restore a tooth to its natural form in both function and appearance. When a large portion of the tooth must be removed due to decay or fracture, a crown is often used to restore the tooth. Crowns often serve to protect root canal treated teeth from fractures as well.
In cosmetic dentistry, crowns and veneers (half-crowns) can be used to create that “Hollywood smile”.
